Making Peace With Perfectionism

Course Summary

Perfectionism is a phenomenon, not a disorder. The larger culture is more focused on the dysfunctional emphasis of perfectionism because the mental health industry is built on an illness model; we’re always MORE focused on the dysfunctional aspects of every psychological experience.

All the material out there right now is about how to overcome, let go of, even how to escape the tyranny of Perfectionism. "Oh! I just have to lower my standards….why didn’t I think of that?" Managing perfectionism by telling perfectionists NOT to be perfectionists is like telling angry people to calm down. Never has this worked. Perfectionists won’t BE average. It’s like telling an artist not to create or stripping a writer of their ability to compose.

What we haven’t been told is there are two different types of perfectionism. Adaptive and Maladaptive.

Psychology professor and researcher Dr. Joachim Stoeber is the leading expert on perfectionism, as well as author of the book The Psychology of Perfectionism: Theory, Research, and Application. In his research he found that adaptive perfectionists demonstrated the highest levels of self-esteem, cooperation and lower levels of procrastination, defensiveness, maladaptive coping styles, and interpersonal problems. They report the highest level of meaning, subjective happiness, and life satisfaction also the lowest levels of anxiety and depression among the groups.

Maladaptive Perfectionism has been linked both conceptually and empirically to eating disorders and disordered eating behaviours. Hilde Bruch, a pioneer in the field of eating disorders, noted that eating disorder patients demonstrate “superperfection.” That is their self-evaluation is overly reliant on [perfect] weight/shape. Diet culture amplifies this! Several studies found that individuals recovered from anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder (generally defined by absence of an eating disorder diagnosis, the return of menses, and normal weight, were actually MORE perfectionistic than healthy control groups. This pattern of results provides support for perfectionism not only being related to the cause and solely associated with the active phase of an eating disorder but also bolsters its role as a risk factor for a return of disordered eating symptoms. Almost a “scar" that remains in recovery.

Perfectionism used to hold me back but that’s because I thought it was a bad thing. Now I’ve embraced that it is my Super Power and I know that ADAPTIVE Perfectionism is a good thing I can use it to strive and accomplish in a positive not a punitive way. This course is the ultimate guide to finding a self compassionate way to manage our perfectionism.
